Lost Mine of Phandelver

Session 2

“What have you done?” cried Harbin Wester, the town master of Phandalin, “I’m of a mind to have you all in shackles and thrown in the dungeon. Otherwise, there will be retribution.”

“When we’re done, there’ll be no Red Brands left to dole out this retribution,” quipped Leshanna.

“We’re on our way to Tresander Manor now,” said Helja, “If we fail, they’ll be no need to throw us in the dungeon as we’ll be prisoners of the Red Brands or worse – though I would like to see you and your constables try.”

“Alright, alright,” mumbled the town master, taken aback by the gleam in Helja’s eyes, “but, if I hear that you did not actually go to the manor, then I will see you in shackles. Constables!” And, with that, he was off.

It was then that Helja and Leshanna noticed that Milo was nowhere to be found. “Just like a rogue to run off when the constablery gets involved,” they thought.

As they started to head down the road to Tresander Manor, a voice cried out, “Wait!”

It was then that Helja and Leshanna met Irni Iphelkiir, a High Elf Wizard who was drawn to Phandalin by visions of a defiled shrine of Oghma in an ancient ruin now called Cragmaw Castle. Irni was on her way to Tresander Manor herself to seek out a goblin servant who was rumored to know the location of Cragmaw Castle when she came across the showdown in front of The Sleeping Giant tap house. She decided to lend a hand by casting a couple of well timed spells from the shadows.

Once Helja and Leshanna decided that they could trust Irni (and Irni decided that she could trust them), they headed off to the manor house together. Even though the sun was setting and the day was drawing to an end, they were able to find and follow a well worn path leading to a stone staircase that took them down to the cellar.

As can be expected in endeavors of this nature, high adventure, fraught with conflict and close calls soon ensued. Red Brands were slain or driven off. A Nothic was found lurking in an underground crevasse that Irni divined was giving off an aura of necromantic magic. The party escaped what was sure to be a bloody fight by directing the fiend back to a couple of bandits that they had recently dispatched to sate its hunger.

While eavesdropping outside what seemed to be the hideout’s common quarters, the adventurers heard two or three rather large sounding bugbears harassing one rather small sounding goblin. It stood to reason that this was the goblin that Irni sought. As they continued to stand outside the door, they overheard the bugbears and the goblin talking about Cragmaw Castle. Though they weren’t able to discern the exact location, they did hear that it was located in the forest north of Phandalin.

The party’s major discovery was that Iarno Albrek, the mage Sildar Hallwinter had been seeking, was actually none other than Glasstaff, the mysterious leader of the Red Brand’s. They found a note in his recently abandoned quarters – very recently by the look of things – that indicated that he in turn worked for the even more mysterious Black Spider. They gave chase to Iarno, but he had gotten too much of a head start.

Helga, Irni and Leshanna emerged from beneath Tresander Manor at dawn, a little worse for wear but happy with the knowledge that they had severely curtailed, if not ended, the Red Brand threat. As they turned towards town and hopefully a few hours of well deserved rest at the Stonehill Inn, they heard a shrill voice call after them, “Wait! Wait! It is I, Droop, your faithful and humble servant…"

Session 1

In the city of Neverwinter, Helja Ungart, Leshanna Galanodel and Milo Brushgather were hired by Helja’s cousin, Gundren Rockseeker, to escort a wagon of supplies to the frontier town of Phandalin and deliver them to Barthen’s Provisions. Upon arrival, each member of the party would be paid 10 gold pieces. Gundren and his companion, Sildar Hallwinter, went on ahead to Phandalin.

While traveling the Triboar trail, Helja, Leshanna and Milo came upon two dead horses lying across the trail. While searching the bodies, they were ambushed by goblins. The adventurers were taken by surprise but were able to rally and quickly dispose of the monsters. Upon further investigation, they discovered that the horses belonged to Gundren and Sildar and that the two had apparently been hauled off on a trail headed north.

Helja, Leshanna and Milo followed the trail to its end five miles north where they came upon a cave which turned out to be a hideout for the Cragmaw goblin tribe. In one of the first rooms of the cave, the party came across a lone wolf chained to a stalagmite. They befriended the wolf by feeding him wild boar gabagoul and Elven waybread. Satisfied that the wolf was happy and full, Milo was able to pick the lock on his collar. It became apparent that the wolf, quickly dubbed Battleheart by Leshanna, was going to follow the adventurers wherever they (and their provisions) went.

The party fought its way through the cave. In the “eating room”, they discovered Sildar chained to a wall. After clearing the room of goblins, they freed Sildar from his chains. While resting to regain their strength and tend to their wounds, they learned the following from him:

  • The three Rockseeker brothers (Gundren, Tharden, and Nundro) recently located an entrance to the long-lost Wave Echo Cave, site of the mines of the Phandelver’s Pact.
  • Klarg, the bugbear who leads this goblin band, had orders to waylay Gundren. Sildar heard from the goblins that the Black Spider sent word that the dwarf was to be brought to him. Sildar doesn’t know who or what the Black Spider is.
  • Gundren had a map showing the secret location of Wave Echo Cave, but the goblins took it when they captured him. Sildar believes that Klarg sent the map and the dwarf to the chief of the Cragmaws at a place called Cragmaw Castle. Sildar doesn’t know where that mightbe, but he suggests someone in Phandalin might know.
  • Sildar’s contact in Phandalin is a human wizard named Iarno Albrek. The wizard traveled to the town two months ago to establish order there. After the Lords’ Alliance received no word from Iarno, Sildar decided to investigate.

The party, with now both Battleheart and Sildar in tow, set out to find the bugbear Klarg and learn what they could from him. However, when they reached his lair, a fight to death quickly ensued. Klarg and his henchman were defeated. After the battle, Helja, Leshanna and Milo searched the bugbear’s lair and discovered a store of goods looted from Lionshield Coster, a merchant Milo recognized from the time he spent in Phandalin, and a treasure chest containing 600 copper pieces, 120 silver pieces, three potions of healing and a jade statuette of frog with tiny golden orbs for eyes.

The adventurers loaded the stolen goods from Lionshield Coster onto their wagon and set off once again for Phandalin. The remainder of their journey was uneventful.

Upon arriving in Phandalin, Helja, Leshanna and Milo delivered the supplies to Barthen’s Provisions then joined Sildar at the Stonehill Inn. They set about trying to find someone who knows the location of Cragmaw Castle, but, instead, keep getting an earful about the Redbrands and the havoc they’re wreaking all over town. Daren Edermath, a former adventurer turned orchard master, and Milo’s Aunt Qelline Alderleaf both offer what information they can in regard to the location of Cragmaw Castle, but nothing seems too promising. So, the adventurers decide to stay the night at the inn and keep asking around town the following day.

The next morning Helja, Leshanna and Milo paid a visit to the local Lionshield Coster outpost to return the goods they discovered in Klarg’s lair. Linene Graywind, the master of the Phandalin post, paid the party 60 gold pieces as a reward and promised to help them in any way possible. When asked about the location of Cragmaw Castle, Linene recommended that the adventurers talk to Halia Thornton at the Phandalin Miner’s Exchange.

Finally, upon speaking with Halia Thornton, the adventurers had a lead. Halia told them that she had heard that the Redbrands have a goblin minion from the Cragmaw tribe serving them and that this minion is holed up in the Redbrand hideout beneath Tresendar Manor. She then told them that if they were to defeat the Redbrand leader, Glasstaff, and bring her any correspondence from the hideout that she would pay them 90 gold pieces.

With the prospects of finding the location of Cragmaw Castle and receiving yet another reward, Helja, Leshanna and Milo set off for Tresendar Manor at once. Outside of the Sleeping Giant tap house, they were accosted by members of the Redbrand gang who tried to rob them then run them out of town. Battle was soon joined. The adventurers made short work of the unscrupulous, undisciplined bandits.

As they prepared to set back out for Tresendar Manor, the townmaster, Harbin Wester, and two armed constables came down the street and called for them to halt…
